Extinction of physical books

With the huge leaps in technology, many books are now published digitally which leads to the concern that physical books will soon become extinct. Personally, I would find it a huge disservice to all people if this became true. There is nothing better than curling up on the coach with a book and getting lost in the fantasy and allure of the story. Yes, this can still be accomplished with a digital book on an Ipad or Nook, however the feeling isn’t the same. The act of physically turning a page, feeling of the weight of the book, the smell of the pages; these can not be replaced or replicated. The physical book is constant. It is always there. It cannot run out of battery and die and the only way to harm it is to rip the pages into shreds. A tumble from the couch (while it may be annoying to loose your page) will not harm the physical book like it may harm the technology used to read the digital version.

The advantage of digitizing the physical book is the accessibility. One lightweight device can hold thousands of books that can be pulled up with a single touch. This aspect of the digital version is extremely convenient and is the leading reason digital books are taking over. But even this great advantage has its downfall. With so much at your finger tips, it is easy to get overwhelmed, or skip past a great book for a flashier cover, or simply get distracted and chose to not read entirely. It is more difficult to stare at the lighted screen for hours on end, which may also prevent people from reading as much.

I feel like both the physical and digital versions of the book are beneficial. It is refreshing to hear sources like CNN are observing the future of the libraries and thinking about the direction they are heading; how they will adapt to accommodate  the changes, how the purpose of the library will adapt, and even the funding concerns.

It is my belief, physical books will always remain. Books like the Bible or Quaran, books that hold that holy title, will always be around in the physical form. This is why BookBrain Bookmarks exist.
